Short Introduction To Phurba

A Phurba is a three-sided peg, stake or nail like ritual implement traditionally associated to Tibetan Buddhism. Phurba is one of the iconographic representation of divine 'symbolic attributes' of Vajrayana and Hindu deities. A phurba is the Nirmanakaya manifestation of Dorje Phurba or Vajrakilaya. It is a ritual implement signifying stability on a prayer ground during ceremonies. Only those who are initiated use the phurba or otherwise empowered may weild it. A phurba may be constituted and constructed from different material and material components like wood, metal, clay, bone, gems, horn, or crystal. Wooden Phurbas are mostly used by shamans for healing and energetic purposes. Like major Tibetan instrument phurbas can be made from brass or iron and also sometimes from copper as well.
The pommel of the Phurba is mostly seen that of Vajrakilaya with three faces but sometimes it can bear the asthamangal, yidams, snow lions or stupa(Chorten) e.t.c as well.
